Kishio Suga: Situations
Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Kishio Suga Situations at Pirelli HangarBicocca (30 September 2016 – 29 January 2017) curated by Yuko Hasegawa and Vicente Todolí.
Situations was the artist's first retrospective at a European institution. The massive spaces at Pirelli HangarBicocca housed 23 major installations from the 1960s to the late 1990s, including the largest re-creation of Left-Behind Situation (1972) to date, spanning the 25 x 25 meter Cubo space.
In addition to an essay by Yuko Hasegawa, the catalogue features in-depth accounts of the history of each work's re-creation over the past five decades. Furthermore, this publication provides translations of three important texts: two early essays by Suga — Beyond The Start of Disappearance: As Things Deny Things (1969) and Existence Beyond Condition (1970) — and Barbara Bertozzi's groundbreaking essay The Language of Things: Theory and Artistic Production of Mono-ha (1988), which was originally published in the catalogue for the first exhibition of Mono-ha presented outside Japan, at Rome University in 1988. Lastly, this book features an updated chronology of the artist's life, first published in the exhibition catalogue for Situated Latency (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 2015)
